10 trends in diagnostics - from printed diagnostics to Epigenetics | Immunology Diagnosis | Scoop.it

By Suzanne Elvidge

Diagnostics are not always perceived as being as exciting or glamorous as therapeutics, but this is a field that is growing and changing just as fast.

Rather than simply being a way to identify which patients have a specific disease, diagnostics are now used to support clinical development of drugs, predict disease before symptoms begin, forecast the progress of a disorder, and identify patients who are most likely to respond (or not respond) to specific treatments.

We've found 10 widely varying trends in diagnostics, from the use of biomarkers in early-stage clinical development to devices and platforms that are already on the market and improving outcomes for patients, and from simple and low-cost paper-based diagnostics at just a dollar or two a test to high-tech genomics screening in cancer.

The one thing that all of these have in common is innovative and exciting science and design, and the opportunity to make patients' lives better. If you know of any technologies in diagnostics that that are just as exciting, please let us know. -- Suzanne Elvidge (email)
