The Microbioma... crucial in Immune Education

The world today is very different from the one our immune system evolved to anticipate — not just in what we encounter, but in when we first encounter it. Preventing autoimmune disorders may require emulating aspects of that “dirtier” world: safely bottling the kinds of microbes that protect the Russian kids, so we can give them to everyone and guide the “postmodern” immune system along a healthier path of development.

Probiotic supplementation during pregnancy or infancy for the prevention of asthma and wheeze: system... http://t.co/gP1CfCGOp0
Alfredo Corell's insight:

Conclusions We found no evidence to support a protective association between perinatal use of probiotics and doctor diagnosed asthma or childhood wheeze. Randomised controlled trials to date have not yielded sufficient evidence to recommend probiotics for the primary prevention of these disorders. Extended follow-up of existing trials, along with further clinical and basic research, are needed to accurately define the role of probiotics in the prevention of childhood asthma.

High prevalence of anaphylaxis in patients with systemic mastocytosis – A single-center experience

High prevalence of anaphylaxis in patients with systemic mastocytosis – A single-center experience | Immunology for University Students | Scoop.it
Background

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a clonal mast cells disorder characterized by the proliferation, accumulation and activation of mast cells in extra-cutaneous tissues. The clinical picture is heterogeneous and may range from asymptomatic to potentially fatal anaphylactic reactions due to excessive mast cell mediator release.

Objective

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and trigger factors of anaphylactic reactions among adult SM patients. We also explored the clinical spectrum of mast cell mediator-related symptoms in SM patients.

Alfredo Corell's insight:

Anaphylaxis is more prevalent in SM patients, predominantly in atopic SM patients. Hymenoptera venom-induced or idiopathic anaphylaxis were the most frequent elicitors. Our findings implicate that all mastocytosis patients with anaphylaxis should undergo detailed allergological assessment before considering treatment and preventive measures.

Extreme Orange Allergy Nearly Kills Toddler in First Recorded Case

Extreme Orange Allergy Nearly Kills Toddler in First Recorded Case | Immunology for University Students | Scoop.it

Fruits like oranges don’t commonly cause allergic reactions, and even when they do, the symptoms are usually mild and involve irritation and itching of the mouth. No need to give up your morning glass of OJ, though.

Alfredo Corell's insight:

A 2-year-old girl in Pennsylvania nearly died recently after she suffered an unusually severe allergic reaction to eating an orange, her doctors reported.

The toddler picked up the orange in a supermarket, and within a few minutes of eating it, she developed a reaction that required a prompt trip to the emergency room, and later a helicopter ride to an intensive care unit at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Mechanisms of peripheral tolerance to allergens

Mechanisms of peripheral tolerance to allergens | Immunology for University Students | Scoop.it
Mechanisms of peripheral tolerance to allergensO. U. Soyer1,2,3,M. Akdis2,3,J. Ring3,4,H. Behrendt3,5,R. Crameri2,R. Lauener3,6,C. A. Akdis2,3,*

Article first published online: 18 DEC 2012

DOI: 10.1111/all.12085

Alfredo Corell's insight:

The immune system is regulated to protect the host from exaggerated stimulatory signals establishing a state of tolerance in healthy individuals. The disequilibrium in immune regulatory vs effector mechanisms results in allergic or autoimmune disorders in genetically predisposed subjects under certain environmental conditions. As demonstrated in allergen-specific immunotherapy and in the healthy immune response to high-dose allergen exposure models in humans, T regulatory cells are essential in the suppression of Th2-mediated inflammation, maintenance of immune tolerance, induction of the two suppressive cytokines interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor-β, inhibition of allergen-specific IgE, and enhancement of IgG4 and IgA. Also, suppression of dendritic cells, mast cells, and eosinophils contributes to the construction of peripheral tolerance to allergens. This review focuses on mechanisms of peripheral tolerance to allergens with special emphasis on recent developments in the area of immune regulation.
