Three Social Trends That Will Influence Education in 2014

Three Social Trends That Will Influence Education in 2014 | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

There are patterns within the trend predictions for 2014 that are worthy of paying attention to. There is strong, if not overwhelming evidence that behaviour patterns of students, educators, employees and professionals are moving towards the use of social tools for learning, working and teaching. Collaborating seamlessly face-to-face and at a distance, bringing the human element to virtual interactions, and personalized learning will prevail in 2014; each facilitated by technology. But it’s not going to be about the technology, it will be about making connections by voice and/or visual, contributing to new knowledge, and learning with and from others—all mediated through social media. It will be the behaviours of students, lifelong learners and educators—their use of technology, specifically social media applications that will influence education in the upcoming year.

Alfredo Corell's insight:

Conclusion
Though we can predict and make an educated guess what the year 2014 will hold for education, we won’t really know until we are in it—knee deep. The year 2012 named by the New York Times as the Year-of-the-MOOC, shook the foundations of education, and no one saw it coming. Will social media influence education by increasing collaboration, humanize the learning experience, and support personalized learning in 2014? Time will tell.

How to Evaluate Learning: Kirkpatrick Model for the 21st Century—A Revision | Social Learning Blog | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

According to Donald L. Kirkpatrick’s Revised “Four Levels of Evaluation” model, what we need to do is find out what success looks like in the eyes of these senior managers and stakeholders and let them define their expectations for the training program. Then we need to identify specific metrics to demonstrate and deliver on those expectations.

“Learning the new” vs “Learning the old”

“Learning the new” vs “Learning the old” | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

By Jane Hart - Learning in the Social Workplace

For many people the word “learning” is synonymous with studying, lessons, classes, etc – because that is how we have been conditioned to believe how “learning” happens. We think back to how we learned at school with a teacher, who took us through a topic step by step, in a logical way. It was the teacher who “joined the dots” for us, linking together all the aspects of the topic in a structured way to help us understand it. And that of course, is now what many think “online learning” is all about; although the teacher is (usually) not physically present any longer, the instructional designer has created the content in the same structured way, by joining the dots for us so that we can work through it in a logical way. Currently this is where corporate e-learning focuses its efforts - delivering online learning experiences for its people to acquire existing bodies of knowledge or skill – it’s all about learning the old. Of course this has an important part to play in what we need to learn to do our jobs, but nowadays it is not the only way we need to learn. We also need to learn the new.

Connecting Social Learning to e-Learning

Connecting Social Learning to e-Learning | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Social constructionism involves the need for collaboration. People learn by expressing something for others to see, understanding the context of others, and observing their peers. Traditional e-learning courses do not facilitate social interaction with other learners. We can now fill this void by connecting learners on social media or social learning platforms to discuss application of the e-learning course content. Using these platforms, learners can communicate with each other instantly, and reach a broad audience. We can design our e-learning to use social media as part of our activities, interactions, and research. By embracing social media as a tool for e-learning collaborative efforts, we can continue to improve the learning experience of online learners.

What does it mean to be infectious? I used my handy Google Dictionary extension for Chrome and this definition relates best to this post: Likely to spread or influence others in a rapid manner.

Platforms, technology, tools and social media that will be used in communication and learning in MOOCs

"The adoption of MOOCs in formal education institutions is challenging, though it opens up new opportunities to experience the co-creation of networks within communities and new and participatory forms of communication and collaboration for both learners and educators."

ifteen-year-old Adora Svitak knows students nowadays “live, work and play” social media.“We’re used to the characteristics of social media: participation, connection, instant gratification,” she tells Mashable, “and when school doesn’t offer the same, it’s easy to tune out.”

To help more educators learn about the benefits of using social media in the classroom, Adora recently taught nearly 3,000 teachers, principals and administrators how to implement Twitter and Facebook into their lives.
