SLR Magic Hyperprime LM CINE 50mm T/0.95 on Sony NEX - Review / Test Report

SLR Magic Hyperprime LM CINE 50mm T/0.95 on Sony NEX - Review / Test Report | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"SLR Magic is an interesting new chinese lens brand. They are manufacturing manual focus lenses for various mounts including Micro-Four-Thirds and Sony NEX. So far most of their lenses were found on the cheaper end of the food chain but they are keen of delivering more ambitious products in the future. We’ve already tested their 12mm f/1.6 in Micro-Four-Thirds mount with good results. However, they have just released a very different beast – the SLR Magic Hyperprime LM CINE 50mm T/0.95 in Leica M mount – it is a build-to-order product. Some of you may not be familiar with the T-value here - it refers to the effective light transmission characteristic rather than the calculated f-number (the T-value is slower than the f-number). At ca. 3000$ it is certainly far from being cheap in absolute terms. However, compared to the Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 it is almost affordable. Please note that it is very different to the Hyperprime 50mm f/0.95 that has already been available for MFT for around 1000$ - this may be a bit confusing so watch out for the details of the lens name.
We’ll provide a Leica M mount review later but as a teaser we have done a quick test based on the Sony NEX 7 and a Metabones Leica M to NEX adapter. Such a setup can only be used with manual focusing and aperture-priority (or M) mode. Due to the purely manual coupling there is no lens specific EXIF data."

SLR Magic x Toy Lens Bokemorphic review

SLR Magic x Toy Lens Bokemorphic review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"The Bokehmorphic is a toy lens that SLR magic will be releasing in the near future. Based on their pre-existing 28mm f/2.8 models, the lens has an extra ring that changes a front aperture filter between a circle, five-sided star, heart, oval, eight-sided star, diamond and a five-leafed clover shape. This allows for some creative fun to be had with the variously shaped bokeh, regardless of whether you are a hipster or not."

SLR Magic announces 23mm F1.7 for Sony NEX's E-mount

SLR Magic announces 23mm F1.7 for Sony NEX's E-mount | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Hong Kong-based lens maker SLR Magic has announced a 23mm F1.7 lens for Sony NEX cameras as part of its 'HyperPrime' range. The E-mount lens offers a 35mm equivalent field-of-view and a minimum focus distance of 0.15m to offer a good degree of control over depth-of-field. It becomes the company's forth E-mount lens (in addition to the recently announced 35mm F1.7, 50mm F0.95 and 28mm F2.8), which it claims it is the fastest APS-C lens of this focal length. The company is seeking volunteers to provide feedback, who will be able to buy the lens at a discounted price."

SLR Magic Hyperprime 12mm f/1.6 - Review / Lens Test

SLR Magic Hyperprime 12mm f/1.6 - Review / Lens Test | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"The lack of speed" is still one of the most frequently used argument against micro-four-thirds. However, things have actually improved quite a bit recently. There's the well-known Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 and the ultra-large aperture Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 (manual focus). The Panasonic Leica DG SUMMILUX 25mm F1.4 ASPH and Olympus 45mm f/1.8 joined the speed club a few months ago as well.

Besides these popular genuine brands there're also a number of smaller players and one of the most exiting is SLR Magic who have just announced the SLR Magic Hyperprime 12mm f/1.6, an uncoupled, manual focus lens and obviously much wider than the existing high-speed offerings. Due to the lack of electronic coupling you will have to live without a camera-controlled aperture and no EXIF data in your images. This may sound somewhat limiting but the lens is very affordable (in relation to its speed) at just 499USD (via eBay).

The SLR Magic Team started in 2009 with c-mount conversion lenses before they founded SLR Magic in 2010 and acquired the full licensing rights for Noktor in May 2011 when Noktor couldn't sustain their lens production.
SLR Magic is based in Hong Kong and their lenses are manufactured in China as well as Japan and finally assembled and adjusted in Hong Kong. According to Andrew Chan, Product Manager from SLR Magic, the company believes "great images are better achieved with manual lenses". Furthermore, they try to achieve "images with character" and therfore they do their best to create "cinematographic lenses for photography use".
"The SLR Magic Hyperprime was a much more complex design than we thought, but we finally made it", said Andrew Chan and explained that they startet with a couple of prototype lenses months ago and sent them to a few very experienced reviewers to get their opinions before production. Finally, after some minor adjustments, the new SLR Magic Hyperprime was borne. Furthermore, Andrew Chan proudly pointed out that their success is based on "the excellent help and support from their distributors as well as their reviewers and volunteers."
Fair enough, let's have a closer look at the lens.
