A Slick New Way To Conference, Collaborate and Present Across Devices: Meet.fm

A Slick New Way To Conference, Collaborate and Present Across Devices: Meet.fm | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it

Robin Good's insight:

Meet.fm is an outstanding new web conferencing app that provides permanent cloud-based meeting rooms and which supports video, audio-conferencing and VoIP, scree-sharing, co-browsing, file sharing, and more.

From the same guys that originally brought you YouDazzle.com, here is a new web conferencing app that really shines in terms of design, ease of use and functionalities offered.

Meet.fm can be used both as a collaborative platform, where every participant can engage, talk and contribute to the session, as well as a webinar-like tool, where there is essentially one presenter guiding the overall attendee experience.

The Meet.fm interface can be personalized with your custom colors and logo and you have the opportunity to tap into most of the major cloud services, directly from Meet.fm. Right now Box.net, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Evernote are all supported. You can upload any file you have sitting on those services and share it or present it immediately to your Meet.fm attendees.

Meet.fm offers a free plan that allows for about eight hours/monthly of one permanent fully-featured 1GB collaboration room for a max of 3 people. Piad plans allow for unlimited time, rooms and for 500+ participants and 100GB of storage (at $199/mo top plan).

Collaborative Screen Sharing App ScreenHero Now Available on Windows Too

Collaborative Screen Sharing App ScreenHero Now Available on Windows Too | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
Simple, collaborative screen sharing. You each get your own mouse, and you're both always in control.
Robin Good's insight:

ScreenHero, which I have reviewed and announced back in December, is a downloadable app which allows anyone to collaboratively screen-share any application and to work together simultaneously on it with others.

Today ScreenHero has released a Windows version of its free app which is immediately available for download here: http://screenhero.com/#download

From the official site: "You each get your own mouse pointer, and you're both always in control. It's designed for collaboration, not just broadcasting your screen.

From the original article on BetaKit: "The team calls Screenhero “Google Docs for any application.”

After downloading the app, signing up, and adding team members or friends, users can either share their entire screen or one individual window.

Once a contact has agreed to view the screenshare, both participants get their own mouse pointer and similar to Google Docs, can simultaneously edit and work on projects.

...

The company said their platform is ideal for developers who are programming together or reviewing code, companies who want to review designs or mockups together, or marketers giving product demos.

The basic account is free, and soon users will be able to pay either $5 per month for an individual pro account, or $49 per month for a pro team account, which will add additional features like support and enterprise integration.

The app also lets users chat using Screenhero’s internal chat feature, currently via text but the company said it plans to add audio chat as well, which is a crucial feature since right now most users who want to chat while they’re working together have to use Skype in conjunction with Screenhero."

Just-in-Time P2P Wireless Device-to-Device Mobile Voice and Data Networking Nearing with Project Batman

Just-in-Time P2P Wireless Device-to-Device Mobile Voice and Data Networking Nearing with Project Batman | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it

Robin Good's insight:

The possibility of a direct, P2P, device-to-device mobile network is getting closer by the day. That means that in emergency situations you will be able to hook up directly to other individuals own cell phone and to create virtual networks capable of voice and data communication just-in-time.

"The Better Approach To Mobile Adhoc Networks (BATMAN) joins smartphones together in an ad-hoc, mesh network, capable of device to device communication.

You can share files and even send messages with the right application. A mobile ad hoc network is identical to a wireless ad hoc network with the additional constraint that the devices are constantly on the move (pdf)."

...

"Project BATMAN is making Android smartphones capabile of peer-to-peer communications, instead of relying on a centralized cell tower, explains Geek.com and Network World."

Source: Dailywireless

BATMAN stands for (better approach to mobile ad-hoc networking) and it is a routing protocol for multi-hop ad-hoc mesh networks

"The BATMAN routing protocol, under development by the Freifunk community, could potentially be integrated into Smart Phone Ad-hoc Network (SPAN), created by Josh Thomas and Jeff Robble.

Shortly after the 2010 Haiti earthquake, these two came to the conclusion

that there needed to be a way for emergency crews to communicate not only with one another but with local volunteers as well.

Smartphones function as their own dedicated mesh network, adding and removing users on the fly. As long as you are within range of the mesh network, you’ll have the ability to call any of the users on the network through VOIP. The catch is each user would need to do is stay in range, which is about 100ft, from the next member of the mesh network."

Group Video Chat, IM and Screen-Sharing of Movies and Applications with Rabbit

Robin Good's insight:

Rabbit is a new downloadable software app (for Mac only now) that allows you to instant message, video conference with multiple parties and to screencast and share in real-time any music, video clip or app.

"Today, a startup company called Rabbit is launching a closed beta of their "video chat and content sharing application".

But the best way to describe it is a cool and very modern implementation of instant messaging.

The most compelling feature of the app can be distilled down to this: group video conferencing with the ability to screencast music, movies and applications from your Mac.

This means you can watch a movie from a service such as Netflix with your friends in real time. Or you can crop and share a specific part of your web browser or any other Mac app and broadcast it to your friends.

The app is a native Mac client (other platforms to come later), and offers the ability to video chat with an unlimited number of people. People are grouped into Rooms and presented to you in priority based on your own friends, and within each room, individual groups can participate in their own conversations."

Store, Share and Connect with Your Own Private Cloud: ownCloud

Store, Share and Connect with Your Own Private Cloud: ownCloud | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
Robin Good's insight:

If you are looking for a good and safe alternative to Drobox or Box.net here is one: Owncloud is an open source software which you can install on your own web server and which provides you not only with full file storage and sharing capabilties, but also with the ability to connect directly to other file storage services and to run HTML5 apps.

Excerpted from the Techcrunch review: "OwnCloud is a free software suite, written in PHP, that provides file storage, synchronization, and sharing. It provides the same basic features of Dropbox or Box.net."

"The core ownCloud offering is file storage and synchronization. You also get optional contacts and calendar synchronization, if you want to use it. As an open source application, you can install it on any computer you control. This means you know how and where your data is stored, something which existing hosted solutions abstract away from you. Individuals and enterprises can install ownCloud on their own hardware, and define access policies according to their own needs."

"...the ownCloud mobile client can automatically upload pictures taken from your phone."

"...ownCloud can be connected to third-party storage like Dropbox or Google Drive or even an FTP server. These are read-write connections, allowing you to use third-party storage in whatever ways make sense for you..."

"...ownCloud supports HTML5 applications, allowing you to add all sorts of additional functionality. The ownCloud app catalog has dozens of apps."

P2P Video Conferencing Comes of Age with WebRTC

Robin Good's insight:

WebRTC, the real-time collaboration and conferencing protocol is getting better and better by the day. With it, and without the need to install any plug-in, software or downloadable extension, browsers like Chrome and Firefox which fully support it, can initiate real-time video conferences just like this one.

In the video above you can see that Google has fully joined Mozilla in demonstrating peer-to-peer (P2P) video conferencing between the Firefox and Chrome web browsers using WebRTC.

"Google and Mozilla are working with the W3C and IETF to develop WebRTC, and although it is still work in progress, the applications that are being developed to demonstrate its capabilities show that WebRTC can mean an end to having to download plugins and add-ons."

In a WebRTC session all audio and video connections are encrypted by utilizing open-source audio and video codecs such as Opus and VP8.

The New Nintendo Wii U Does Videoconferencing

Robin Good: The New Wii U gaming platform now integrates some powerful videoconferencing capabilities allowing one-to-one quality videoconferencing between any two Wii users.

Telepresenceoptions writes about it: "...The new Wii U has Vidyo-powered videoconferencing capabilities.

The video above illustrates how this has been integrated into Wii U Chat.

No complicated explanation needed, you can simply use your Wii U to make video calls to other Wii U devices.

Today it supports point to point (or Mii to Mii) calls, but multipoint and mobile support are in the works. "
