Tinychat To Introduce Facebook Group Video Chat App

Tinychat To Introduce Facebook Group Video Chat App | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
Facebook’s video chat was perhaps the gem of their “amazing things” announcement from a few days ago. The pairing of Skype with Facebook has been widely lauded from within Facebook and oft-discussed well beyond those boundaries. Now, users who don’t want to rely on Facebook’s video chat could soon have another option.

As long as they have an iOS device, that is. According to a report at TechCrunch, Tinychat will introduce an iPhone/iPad app that allows users to add up to 12 Facebook friends into a video chat, which will take place on mobile devices.

While desktop use is rumored to be supported, Tinychat’s upcoming app is designed with the mobile user in mind. As the description indicates, the app will focus on the Facebook community, although, one wonders why Tinychat just doesn’t shuck Facebook integration and just focus on developing their own version of mobile group chat, based on their technology.

5 Free Collaborative Whiteboard Apps For the iPad

5 Free Collaborative Whiteboard Apps For the iPad | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
It seems as though the minute the iPad was announced, innumerable light bulbs went off as developers and entrepreneurs everywhere came to the same realization: "We could totally use this device as a digital whiteboard!" Indeed, a search for the word "whiteboard" in the App Store returns a whopping 170 iPad apps.

Although the device's 10-inch screen may not compare to a full-sized, physical whiteboard, it can be quite handy to use a virtual whiteboard with team members remotely, and the iPad's form factor suits itself quite well to exactly that.

This isn’t every single thing there is to know about Google+. That could probably be a book rather than an article, and the Google+ Project has only just begun. If Google has its way, it will live on for years. Or it could go the Google Wave route. It’s just too early to tell.

Do you think Google+ will succeed? Share your thoughts in the comments.

While we’ll no doubt learn plenty more about Google+ as time goes on, here are some quick nuggets to get you a little more acquainted with it.

Talkwheel wants to reinvent the way we communicate online

Talkwheel wants to reinvent the way we communicate online | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
We have email, we have message boards, we have IM, but if they aren’t integrated with one another, our collaborative communications often fall short.

Andy McLoughlin, cofounder of Huddle, recently discussed the limitations of email as a collaboration tool. Virtual teams are finding email streams hard to track and harder to scale.

IM conversations, while great in the moment, often disappear into the ether, not archived for future reference. And message boards are barely a step up from the Usenet Newsgroups of the early Internet.

Google+: Everyone Seems to be Missing the Big Picture

Google+: Everyone Seems to be Missing the Big Picture | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
But the key here is that Google has all the pieces. Think about it. Neither Twitter or Facebook has a mobile OS. Google does. Apple has an OS but doesn’t have a Social Network, nor the back end Cloud Syncing Data capabilities that Google has.

This is why Apple and Twitter are having a “shotgun” wedding in iOS5 and why Microsoft is engaged with Facebook. But these types of “bolted” together arrangements rarely work. Two different companies, two different cultures.

But still you get the point: These other companies don’t have all the pieces to bring together the new paradigm of the Web and Mobile being the new productivity platform. Google does have all the pieces. Their “jigsaw” puzzle type logo is now making more sense.

This isn’t just about a Social Network. This is about a platform of services that are tightly integrated.

Why Facebook and Google+ are the iPad’s ‘Killer Apps’

Why Facebook and Google+ are the iPad’s ‘Killer Apps’ | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
Remember the old “killer app” concept? The idea is that an application becomes so desirable that it guarantees massive sales of the hardware platform it runs on.

The Wikipedia has the best definition I’ve seen: A killer app is “any computer program that is so necessary or desirable that it proves the core value of some larger technology, such as computer hardware, gaming console, software, or an operating system. A killer app can substantially increase sales of the platform on which it runs.”

The best examples are VisiCalc on the Apple II and Lotus 1-2-3 for the IBM PC. Don’t laugh. Without those early “killer apps,” you may never have even heard of the Mac or Windows. (“Cult of Commodore,” anyone?)

Google+ Hangout Is The Best Free Group Video Chat We’ve Seen | Lifehacker Australia

Google+ Hangout Is The Best Free Group Video Chat We’ve Seen | Lifehacker Australia | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
Lifehacker has been playing around with Google+ all morning, and so far the coolest innovation we’ve seen — particularly from a productivity standpoint — is the Hangout feature, which creates rooms for you to hang out with your friends, coworkers, or any of your social circles. It’s great.

We’ve tried out various video conferencing solutions before — like Skype’s subscription-required, clunky group video calling — and they’ve never really worked that well. Google Hangout, on the other hand, has so far been really impressive. In fact, the main stumbling block so far seems to be related more to slower connections than to the tool itself.

Google Taking On Skype: Video Chat in Chrome

Google Taking On Skype: Video Chat in Chrome | Online Collaboration Tools | Scoop.it
Google is adding its WebRTC software into Chrome which will eventually allow for voice and video calling without the need for a plug-in or external 3rd-party application.

ZoomGoogle is now implementing its open-source audio and video chat software into the Chrome browser, enabling users to chat in real-time without having to load up a secondary client like Skype.

Called WebRTC, the software was originally introduced back in May and originated from Google's 2010 acquisition of Internet telephony and videoconferencing specialist Global IP Solutions (GIPS).
